It is over. The door opened, freedom glanced, glanced back just once, then rushed to the fast-closing door, slamming hard behind her flight.

Liberty and Justice heaved relief, now the weight of a mighty boulder. At least the boulder was on the correct side of the door.

The long dark night quickly descends upon the Land of the Unfree. The new transatlantic hotline grows white with use. Who would ever have guessed? Washington DC and the Kremlin.

Who would ever have thought that an American vice president could openly foment disquiet, even hostility, towards Europe?

In Britain and Europe this is what is happening. We are becoming increasingly irritated by that awful drawling American accent, the dominance of America on all the streaming services, all the famous Hollywood logos now resting upon the Amazon banner. If it’s American, it’s bad. Quality is not the hallmark of the American.

War films and box sets now slanting history in America’s favour.

You’re right, America. The peace dividend is over. But do not fall into that “there’s a new sheriff in town mentality” that was thrown in our faces in Munich.

We have no respect for you. You have milked your role as leader of the free world for all it is worth. Now you have created a trade war. You are not welcome here in Britain. Nor in Europe. You take over hotels, you boom and ask banal questions “will I see the Queen?”

You are a very peculiar people. You have no ties even though you like to think you do.

You can no longer be trusted.

And even when, as it is inevitable, your 47th comes to an abrupt and ignominious end, and the pendulum swings back to the so-called democrats, it will be too late. You burned your boats. Your history is a less than 300 years old.

Our history, both on the European Continent and in these British Isles, is many thousands.

There is no special relationship. I remember when this was very important to me, vital in fact. I was absolutely, how do you put it? an Americanophile. No more. That started coming apart at the turn of the century. During the Obama Administration, I held on. I might as well have thrown good coffee down the drain. It masked what all of you were up to as a nation.

Now the cover is blown, and the Art of the Dealer has played his hand in a way that only the historians will be able to make sense of long after we are all dead.

You stupid people. You stupid, benighted people.

How can you expect any of us to hold in high esteem a bunch of amateur politicians who use emojis. That’s a psychological mess.

You are the American-speaking Peoples. That is good. You have a nation of fifty states. You are, you keep telling us, the mightiest nation and wealthiest nation on earth. Your spokesman Christian Gorka always adds “AND we have twelve aircraft carriers.” Yes, we know.

Never presume you are part of the world-wide English-speaking Peoples, for that is to say you are equal to the fifth British Empire which we metamorphosed into the British Commonwealth. The older ones among you might recall, or be aware of, this. You might have a light-bulb moment. Oh, so THAT’s why Churchill kept referring to the Commonwealth and its Empire, or the British Empire and Commonwealth, and so on.

Here’s the thing. The British Commonwealth which included naturally the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, decided that it was right and proper to remove ‘British’ it did so exactly as a family of nations would do so. Not out of spite or anger. But because we were moving with the times. The Commonwealth of Nations then affirmed that its Head of State should remain the then Monarch, Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen was no mere figurehead. The Queen was very much the driving force behind the scenes, as successive UK and Commonwealth governments discovered. That is something that is beyond the grasp of America. Your northern neighbour, Canada, fully grasped it, and still grasps it.

And remember this America. You are feeling mightily uptight about Europe taking you to the cleaners. I understand that argument. There is some merit. But you cannot have your cake and eat it as we say here.

The British People in 1939, 1940 and 1941 stood alone. Roosevelt eventually came up with his Lend-Lease deal. The cost of that was so great, the four-term president rightly knew that it would cripple the British Government, effectively remove her from the world stage and destroy her empire. Lend-Lease enabled us to fight an aggressive offensive against Nazi Germany even while you were still having temper-tantrums about being isolationist.

And you Americanos - yeah - you coffee beans who keep going on about NATO and your MAGA Boss who keeps rabbiting on about figures that he inflates, then conflates, then forgets what he’s said, so tells us all to read his moribund Art of the Deal, we’ve paid our way in NATO. Our commitment to repay Lend-Lease - a cast-iron and absolutely correct thing to do - we vigorously pursued, and we made the final payment to you Americans in 2006.

We British have set VERY high standards and it is a high bar that America is constantly failing to attain. Do not expect us to regard you as lead of the free world. Your president is, just as Musk and his chainsaw, dismantling the free world.
